Top-Selling Movie Soundtracks of All-Time

Grease, Footloose, Flashdance are amongst the Top 20 best-sellers in the U.S.

BY EMIL TIEDEMANN

Over the last couple of years soundtracks have made somewhat of a comeback, with recent chart-topping efforts in Juno (2007), Slumdog Millionaire (2008), Twilight (2008), and Hannah Montana: The Movie (2009), all of which have reached platinum status in the United States. But despite their popularity and ranks on the Billboard charts they--like all albums--just don't see the numbers that older records have experienced, such as Footloose (1984), The Bodyguard (1992) or Titanic (1997).

The ongoing sales slump, which declines with every year, is due entirely to downloading, both legal and illegal, stunting an industry that has had to come up with new ways to make a buck. It is highly unlikely that any of the recent or upcoming soundtracks will ever come remotely close to the #1 soundtrack of all-time, Whitney Houston's The Bodyguard, which has sold more than 42 million copies worldwide, or will catch up to any of the 20 albums on this list for that matter.

In light of the recent success of soundtracks, SiM has gathered the top-selling movie albums of all-time (domestically), all of which were issued before the downloading craze of the current decade. If you notice, none of the albums below were issued after the year 2000, which serves as the tipping point of when the downloading phenomenon really took over the music industry. Any of the albums followed by an asterisk (*) indicates that the film won an Academy Award for either (or both) Best Original Song or Best Original Song Score.
