Eminem Makes Brief Return to Big Screen

Comics galore in Apatow's latest venture

BY EMIL TIEDEMANN

Since starring in his first film, 2002's 8 Mile, rap star Eminem has gone through a second divorce (from the same woman), lost his best friend and collaborator (rapper Proof), and battled with drug addiction. So what better film to make his comeback than in Judd Apatow's Funny People.

Directed and scripted by Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up), Funny People stars Eric Bana (Star Trek) and two of Hollywood's most bankable comics, Adam Sandler (Bedtime Stories) and Seth Rogen (Observe & Report). It'll also feature Jonah Hill (Superbad), Leslie Mann (17 Again), Jason Schwartzman (The Darjeeling Limited), and Judd's daughter Maude Apatow (Knocked Up).

Eminem's last big screen venture was a lead role as rap-wannabe Jimmy "B-Rabbit" Smith in Curtis Hanson's 8 Mile, which so-starred Kim Basinger and Mekhi Phifer (as well as Proof), and won Em an Academy Award for Best Original Song ("Lose Yourself"). His acting had also impressed critics, earning him two MTV Movie Awards (Best Male Performance and Breakthrough Male Performance) and nods from the Online Film Critics Society and the Chicago Film Critics Association.

Funny People, which hits theatres July 31st, has many other notables who make cameos as themselves, including Norm MacDonald, Sarah Silverman, Andy Dick, and Maria Bamford, while fellow rapper RZA (American Gangster) also had a bit part.
